2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the need for a more defined vision.
The president stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Hires
This announcement follows a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a more distinct brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and trust your team can secure victory? The option is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to further news as creation progresses.
