A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.

Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities said. In excess of 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Locals have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the operation, along with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are presently concealed in the city.
